…great momentum…

For starters, Happy New Year on behalf of the NLAC!

This year has started up right where the NLAC left it in 2011. Last year the collective had a number of achievements including: Goodfellas Gallery opening; solo art exhibitions and great sales. These achievements have changed the course of the collective for the better.

Naturally, lots in store for 2012:

- NLAC Solo Exhibit – Goodfellas Gallery –  Sept/Oct
- Dr. Func gets advertising: DR FUNC
- Great new work/ new concepts
- More NLAC videos
-  New NLAC member
- Group shows: TOAE; AP;
-  Belmonte Raw: Belmonte RAW
–  Bistro Chezanne: BISTRO CHEZANNE
–  New Venues for hanging

We have said it before, “Art is the vehicle for our chaos. Cheers, to more chaos!”

goodfellas gallery grand opening

Goodfellas is a commercially driven gallery focused on giving Toronto’s urban living a face lift. The owners took what was formally known as “Ushers Groceries” and converted the space into the pinnacle for exhibiting commercial and collector’s art in the Parkdale area. Already dealing in high end real estate and commercial design, they felt it was time to open a space that focused entirely on rejuvenating art in commercial spaces and joining some of the other inspiring local businesses in bringing awareness to the potential of the neighborhood.

MOTEL 6

By Evan Desmarais

It was midnight again.  It came like it usually does, every night, in between eleven and one.  It’s almost time.  I feel the heaviness of the humidity on my body as I listen to the sounds of the broken air conditioner tries to kick itself back into functioning.  This was the cheapest hotel I’ve brought her too.  She always falls asleep right after it’s done.  As if the act itself hurts more than it helps.  I try and sleep.  Close my eyes for a little.  I just don’t feel comfortable sleeping next to my sister when we have that other bed.  It’s still made.  We didn’t need to use it tonight.  I lay here to feel the chill she emits.  She’s cooler than this crummy machine this one star motel can afford.

BANG

Shit, that came from the bathroom.  I better go check it out.  Thank god sis didn’t wake up, she needs her rest.  I open the door.  The floor is covered with shampoo, I almost slip.  She’s still in the tub of ice, but it seems like the anesthetic is wearing off.   This bitch must have convulsed and knocked over the shampoo.  Fuck, sometimes this gets a little much.  I contemplate leaving, just running away, but how could a brother do that.  Plus I’m already in so deep as it is.  I stick the woman in the tub with another shot of ketamine.  That should keep her under.  I brush her hair out of her eyes and kiss her on the forehead.  She was a nice girl, real healthy.  I hope she can make it through this.

I sit in the bathroom staring at the lifeless hotel attendant while I write her a note for when she wakes up.

Dear Karen, We are sorry, so very sorry.  But you should make it through this fine.  Right now you’re probably scared and delirious.  There are oxycontin on the counter right next to the glass of water.  Take 2 right now.  Then whenever you start to feel pain, take another one.  My sister and I have taken one of your kidneys and one of your lungs.  My sister has a rare blood disease that requires multiple operations that we can’t afford.  We need to keep replacing her kidneys every 2-3 months or she’ll die.  And we are going to sell your lung for living expenses.  Don’t try calling the police, because by the time you come through we’ll be half way across the country.  Thank you again.  And good luck.”

I never tell them how I’m not medically trained at all, and I learned everything I know off of the Internet.  What a great tool.  I still can’t believe that just a year ago I was working the meat counter back in Okemah, Oklahoma.  It’s amazing what you’ll do out of desperation.  I couldn’t imagine what anyone form back home would think if they knew the kind of life I was living now.  Being on the run form the police, while exploring the country and saving my sister.  It feels all so surreal.  Some days I wish I’d just wake up on my bed back in Okemah and none of this ever happened.  That my sister never got the news she’s dying.  But that’s just a dream now, this is my life.

I move back to the bed and take a sip of the luke warm coffee.  I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.  I can’t stop running over and over in my head that this is the 5th girl we’ve done this too and only the last one lived.  Regardless I shouldn’t sleep, its about time I wake my sister up.  We probably should have left by now.  I lean over and I whisper to her.

“Everything’s going to be okay.  I love you sweet angel.”

rat sCreams…

While it’s fresh and grimy…

For the first time in months there has been extraterrestrial activity in my home. I was in the kitchen chilling when I was rudely interrupted by a vulgar beast. It was half the size of a regular house cat. I glued to the outside wall, as it slithered passed me. On the way out of the room, it stopped by the doorway; cursed me with a vile smile and gave me, what looked liked, a crooked middle finger. It took moments for me to come out of shock to chase it. This beast was so abnormally big and chunky that it rearranged furniture as it made its way through my humble home. My broom finally came in handy as I swatted empty spaces under my couches in search of this lurking nightmare. I opened my back door and motioned for the rat to take my orders and leave. It did…. So I thought.

This rat was stuuuupid big. There was no way this goon made its way into my house through a hole or crawl space. When I moved in, I caulked all the walls and holes, I stuffed the crevasses’ with steel wool and plugged any godforsaken craters.

Anyways… when I awoke the next morning, I went to my toilet and noticed a huge pile of plaster. It was dug out from the side wall. The rat never left. It waited to escape. Now it’s in my walls.

Anxiety arose when I had to sit my girlfriend down. I built up the courage to explain the situation. Something along the lines like, “I have cat sized rats…” (If there were just little mice running around, that is one thing… but these ghastly goons are way beyond.)

My nights are now shared with rats puttering in my walls. From time to time they happen to get riled up at which point they start screaming in my walls. Now, I share my sleeps with rat screams.

…loSe tHe Oars…

It’s been a while since I have sent out an update… I wanted to capture what I am going through in a literal sense and then share it with my people. Perhaps this exposure will help me sort out my destiny. A year ago, I would have told you I have done it all. A year later I tell you otherwise. I have been giving out analogies reflecting my life

My latest analogies:

My life is a thousand piece puzzle that
I have dumped on the floor, and not on a table but the floor, and not poured, but dumped. The box which contains the picture of my life is lost/missing/misplaced/discarded. Some of the edge pieces are missing… Half the pieces are upside down. A few of the puzzle pieces have connected, but just by sheer chance as they fell from the box. Some days I have been jamming pieces that do not fit together; other days I get lucky and put a few together… I call it reinvention…

The other analogy I have been using for my life is based on a piece of positive literature I read in an email. It exclaimed, “lose the oars”. To me, meaning, let go and turn it over to the Great One. Well, I tossed the oars in the bubbling waters, roamed carelessly for sometime and I finally reached the shore (per say). I enjoyed the coast for some time, but I never set up shop or made my way into the mainland. Time came to get back in the boat and push myself back into the waters; of course with no oars. Puzzlement derives from the fact that I made the decision to push myself back into the abyss…

So here I am. The water is a bit shifty and the air is thick and foggy. My paintings “lust and found” reflect this period.

Bringing me to here …

My identity for June 3, 2010: I work for a contact centre answering phone calls on behalf of one the provincial ministries. By doing so, I am allotted a cute monetary instalment into my chequing account every other Thursday. Thus, allowing me to live in Parkdale. It’s a little piece of ghetto paradise located on the west shore in Toronto. This old dwelling has recently transformed into a painters laboratory/gallery. Though my apartment is rustic, my area is happening. I run along Sunny Side Park beach and box at Bloor St. Boxing. Exploration occurs through late night strolls down Queen St. West. My exploration usually starts or ends in a self appraisal in the mirror. My friends are peppered throughout the city as are my dates.

When in paintmode, I get lost in Frusciante, Floyd, house, indie, Mr. West, random hiphop, Beatles, Skynyrd. I open up my floor and dump multiple canvases on my messy plastic blankets and paper sheets. I tip the couches, smudge the house and throw the liquid. Oh and lately I have been into creating coffee tables. Have a look… Don’t worry, I rent

the helmet

The Parkdale Mission Two: the helmet…next nevel regroups

Maddie-Jo Tilley arrived at the Shoreview Apartments in Parkdale, Toronto, mid afternoon Saturday, April 17, 2010 to visit her brother, Tyler Tilley and to complete a custom art piece for the Canadian military. A great story, get this…

Over a month ago, our brother, Snips, 3rd member of Next Level Art, recently joined the Canadian military. Two days after his departure, we got an email from Olexander Wlasenko, curator from Station Gallery in Whitby, exclaiming he wanted Next Level to produce a custom art piece—a custom art piece for the Canadian military! It just so happens that the military is having a high end gala at the end of May 2010. There, they auction off official military helmets painted by select artists. It was then that we told Olex of our brother’s own journey and how significant this opportunity truly was.

pd mission two- the helmet copy

We started the creation process by capturing our colours and energy onto a large 3.5’x2.5’ masterpiece which we called “layla” (named after a famous Eric C. track). We used the very same style as “layla” and delivered it to the helmet. We beat that helmet with paint and raw emotion. In fact, I wore the dripping shell while M J stuck me over the skull with a piece of wood creating the effects we needed. We unleashed our next level style all over this helmet.

Thus… we dedicate this helmet not only to the military, but to our own brother…

You are now looking at “the helmet”.

Love,

The Next Level

the parkdale mission one:

Mr. Watson turns 27(time of the season 1,2,3; knocking on heaven’s door)

My apartment had to be rearranged in order for us to deliver. The couches and furniture were packed to the front of my lab/living room and the floor was open for business.

Mr. Watson brought the canvas and the tops of the coffee tables for us to work with. Right off we crushed a 3 piece series called “time of the season 1,2,3” by the Zombies. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc7b62El_fk&feature=related . The triptych was that of a dark magic. Have a gander…

Mission One

In the midst of painting the table top piece, the fourth piece of the night, we began painting the wall of my apartment! We just led the energy onto the wall. We led it by tossing a bucket of black flat onto the white wall. It turned out to be “the poltergeist!” You can find this piece as the backdrop in most of our photos. Rather demonic and spicy.

While covered in rust paint and feeling dizzy, Rob and I took a break from capturing our emotions. Off for a cozy little stroll down King St. W. Once we returned we finished our table piece known as “knockin on heaven’s door” by another band other than G N R.

And by this time, Rob also turned 27 years old…

Next Level.

Just want to share some good news. Plus it has been a while since we have added a post.

This latest piece that was sold is very interesting. It was hanging at Nordac Gallery in Oshawa. It orginally was a painted that my brother any my mother helped create, but then we painted over it. It is named after the song “A Little Bit of Red” by Serena Ryder, Canadian Artist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F78yp9urz4 . When we painted over the first piece we were able to use a lot of the texture and colour from underneath. This is a very strong piece.

15 minutes of fame

With my position at work, I am allotted 15 minutes for my morning break. It is asked that I do not extend my break over the 15 minute grace period. The sign in and out process is recorded. I’m fine with all of this.

Today’s 15 minute break…

I ran down the five flights versus taking the elevator. It does not save much time but I feel much better as I am much more alive when I am flying down the stairs. The exit puts me right onto the downtown sidewalk. From here I walked with the current. I passed a fellow colleague as I was pulled towards a church about a block and a half away. As I took my brisk and significant steps towards the landmark, a noticeable lineup of individuals flowed from the church front doors. My guess would be that it is a food bank and the patrons were waiting for their portions. I continued to gravitate towards the line and then I walked by.

I took the first left following the church and another left soon after. Now I was heading back towards my work. Being in the moment gave me the desire to say my cordial “hellos” as I passed others on the sidewalk.

While approaching my final left turn, I walked right into an interview on the street corner. A local TV station asked me about the fake and mysterious winter we have been having. “We had such a heavy and chaotic winter last year that I feel at ease with this year’s lack of a Canadian winter. Not worried. I am enjoying the gift,” was my response.

My pace picked up upon reentering the concrete building. I, again, passed the same colleague that I had passed MINUTES earlier. “Today is the day, Darren,” my spirit exclaimed, “today is the day!” Without knowing what I was talking about, he felt the words.

I made my way on to the elevator with an older woman who also works on my floor. She was just as excited about her allotted grace period as I was. We shared about the exciting upcoming long weekend and both felt the energy about that.

On the way to my cubicle I was told I had 2 minutes to spare. I asked the coworker what she was going to do with her remaining two minutes.

And now I am back at my desk.

The power of the moment. Freedom.

blunt answer? + response

January 5, 2010

I found this random website on Kijiji. It was offering free “blunt” answers to life I prersumed. So the following was my question. I will keep you informed with the answer I receive. Link: http://illtellyou.weebly.com/

“I am excited to see how you will deal with me.

I am looking for emancipation from my stagnant position regarding my career/life. I feel I can do anything on this earth. Me, simply, I love art and have been putting lots of energy around this I have a side job to subsidize my
passion but I also feel stale. Help.

Not looking for a psychic, but more of an out of the ordinary approach to my conundrum.

Where will I find my answer? I already looked inside. Or maybe I have not looked deep enough?

Blunt answer?”

Answer to follow…

__________________________________________________________________

RESPONSE FROM: http://illtellyou.weebly.com/

I dont commend you for wanting to do what gives you energy, however, I will commend y0u for taking steps to act instead of talk.  The question is do you want to be a world renowned artist, or do you want to make a living doing something you enjoy and feel fulfilled.  To become a world renowned artist, whether it is sculptor, painter, writer or a different genre my only advice is perseverance and know that you are going to have many obstacles and stepping stones and that to just keep going.  Dont be hard headed and listen to people, truly listen you dont have to take their advice, but listen.  Get to know other artists, and take their advice and start walking in those circles.

And when your friends or people you talk to do laugh, as people do love to bring down other people when you tell them you are going for this tell them to stick it up their …..  People say stupid things when they are jealous.

Just a quick tidbit about displaying your art, trying giving your art to a restaurant, library or a gallery run by fellow artists.  These places usually allow you to display your art for free for a certain period of time, and some places allow you to sell as well.  Either way gets your name out and you could sell a piece as well.

Another way to display your art is to talk to Interior Designers and Home Stagers as they rent art for events, open houses and if a person is interested the option to buy is there.

Now if you want to make a living at it think outside the box, and in the beginning think LOW OVERHEAD, LOW, LOW.  Do you want to work with children, adults, do you care?  Children, easier then you think, summertime post an ad offer free parent and children classes in the park, your not paying for location/venue, so you charge for the materials and the rest is profit.  Dont get greedy start of slow and then slowly up prices…greedy you get nothing.  Also offer an adult class, especially for new mothers, who may just be looking to get sane again.  If you are looking to do something for older groups then you can do the same idea, but be creative and contriversial (slowly at first), but same idea.

If you want something right outside the box do event planning but put a spin on it.  Dont do the usual stuff say you are the event planner for the unique, for the so called freaks, for the different.  My friend and I were talking and said that all the event planners and wedding planners do the typical, boring, expecting, mundane events and stick their nose up at the difference.  Put your own spin on it.

Also please remember that putting your ad everywhere is key, there are lots of free sites now, start your own group, twitter, do something.

Please remember that you get going and you get excited but keep your part time job until you are well known in the community, and are positive that you will have a steady income…..and 6 months is not enough time to do this, so dont fool yourself at all.

Please let me know what you thought of the advice..

the torch

Thursday, December 17, 2009

My intention for this entry is so I can remember the experience.

Last night, in the midst of my hustle and bustle, I was rerouted by a power much greater than myself…

I was heading up Simcoe St. towards Taunton Rd around 6:00pm when I noticed large crowds lining up on the sides of the street. It took a few more blocks of driving before I clued in. It was the Olympic Torch coming to town… What was so significant was the fact that I really had no reason to drive north on Simcoe. So I feel like I was suppose to witness this wondrous human phenomenon. It consisted of a long parade of sponsorship vehicles (like Coke and what not), buses, and police. As I drove alongside of the parade I was able to capture all the excitement as traffic was slow. Next thing I know I see the bright torch light in the night. Our paths crossed quite literally.

Heavy.

the shooting star/as real as it gets…

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

This must be captured. And so it is.

I captured, held and embraced a shooting star today! How often do you get to hear or share that?

It landed this morning at 8:30am in the Oshawa General Hospital. I was told there were many witnesses. And those who saw, felt and grasped the experience also noticed the world lighten and grow.

When I found out about the landing, it was both overwhelming and relieving to know there was a brand new spirit joining us on this journey called life. And since the guiders of this miracle are so close to my life, I felt a barrage of mixed feelings. What was astonishing was the gravitational pull this wild wonder had over me. I was able to bypass all my own emotions and current persoanal chaos as soon as I laid eyes on her. In fact, I met Zoey Anne Kathleen Paterson and Carri Carlyle with a childlike giggle followed by relief and a reminder of how REAL life is. Seeing this star was as real as it gets.

The following moments were so profound, that as I write, I can vividly recall each moment I spent in the presence of those two wonderful women. I can remember the footsteps and each word said. It was not long before a brand new life was in my arms. Only the moment was reciprocated between us. Like a bolt of lightning combined with a past caress from my own mother. I was refreshed. Either a spell was lifted or cast; I would like to believe both.

I spoke the deepest prayers I could find within in order to give all I could at that very moment. It was a feeling of honour and delight to be there.

I was off to find the father. He was, but at Teddy’s Eatery with his two fathers. And I can still feel the embrace we shared.

I was to return later in the evening for a follow up visit. I could not get enough of this new life.

And to think how often this occurs.

A day in the life of life.
